How we pick these

Three things we look at.

01

Where you are

Your ZIP maps to a USDA zone and a NOAA grid cell. The soil temperature and forecast behind this list come from the cell over your garden, not a statewide average, not the seed packet’s guess.

02

Your frost dates

Your first frost date is a 30-year average from NOAA normals, not a hunch. Everything above is sized to finish inside your frost-free season, with margin to spare.

03

Our variety library

Every variety carries a day count we trust because grower references back it. When one won’t finish in your window, it doesn’t make the list.

Frost dates are 30-year averages from NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals, read from the station nearest your ZIP. Growing guidance comes from cooperative extension services (Clemson HGIC, Auburn ACES, NCSU) and other public growing references. Every fact in the app carries its citation.

From the founder

I built Row & Bed because I couldn’t find what I needed.

I’m a first-year gardener with a 25 by 50 foot plot in Huntsville, Alabama, in zone 8a. I went in ambitious. I also went in without a good reference. What I found online was either too generic, too specific to someone else’s climate, or locked behind an app that wanted me to manage a checklist.

The information in Row & Bed comes from public sources: extension services, grower libraries, climate data. I’ve read carefully and done my best to get it right. I’m not promising it’s perfect. When something’s wrong, you tell me and I fix it.
