How to grow zucchini

Zucchini is a warm season summer squash grown for how much food a few plants return over a single summer, with fruit forming from pollinated flowers within days of bloom. Most home garden types grow as a compact bush rather than a rambling vine, so one or two plants fit a modest bed and still supply a household. Gardeners eat the fruit cooked, raw, or shredded into baked goods, and the flowers are edible too. The tradeoff is upkeep: fruit left a couple of days too long turns hard skinned and seedy, and University of Minnesota Extension notes that leaving oversized fruit on the vine reduces the plant's overall yield.

The hardest part of growing zucchini well is the squash vine borer. Illinois Extension describes how the larvae bore into the stem base and feed inside for weeks, hollowing out tissue until the classic symptom appears: sudden wilting of a runner or the whole plant. By then the borer is already inside, where insecticide has no effect. A second year gardener who sees a healthy plant collapse overnight often assumes underwatering and adds more irrigation, missing the narrow window when slitting the stem to remove the larva could still save it.
