How to grow asparagus

Asparagus officinalis is a perennial vegetable that occupies the same bed for 15 years or more, making it one of the few permanent fixtures a home gardener installs rather than replants. It is also among the earliest edible crops each spring: thick spears push up from buried underground crowns weeks before most annual vegetables are started indoors. The harvest window runs roughly 6 to 8 weeks, after which spears left standing unfurl into tall, feathery ferns that fill the bed for the rest of summer. That fern growth is not decorative; it is how the plant stores energy for the following year's spears.

The hardest part of growing asparagus well is restraining the harvest in the plant's first few seasons. A second-year gardener who sees a flush of spears often harvests as if the bed were fully established, but the crowns are still building the root reserves that sustain decades of production. The University of Maryland Extension warns that plants harvested too heavily too soon often become weak and spindly. Weakened crowns produce fewer, thinner spears in subsequent seasons, a decline that compounds year over year and can shorten a bed's productive life well before it reaches maturity.
